5 Mistakes New Lash Artists Make (and How to Avoid Them)

Jun 06, 2025

Starting out as a new lash artist is exciting — but let’s be honest, it can also be a little overwhelming.

Between learning techniques, posting on Instagram, and trying to attract your first clients, it’s easy to feel like you’re constantly second-guessing yourself.

So today, I want to help you skip the trial-and-error phase and avoid the mistakes I see new lash artists make all the time.

Mistake 1: Rushing Through Training

When you’re excited to start lashing, it’s tempting to speed through your course just to get certified.

But here’s the truth: the speed doesn’t matter — the skill does.

Take your time. Practise intentionally. Ask questions. Submit your work for feedback.

The lash artists who succeed long-term are the ones who build their foundations properly.

Inside The Ultimate Lash Artistry Course, you’re encouraged to go at your own pace — with feedback, support, and structured guidance every step of the way.

Mistake 2: Not Setting Boundaries Early On

From the moment you start offering services, you’re not just a lash artist — you’re a business owner.

That means you need:

  • Clear booking policies
  • A cancellation policy
  • Boundaries with time and communication

It’s harder to set boundaries later, so start as you mean to go on.

Need help with this? My Free Lash Biz Starter Kit includes a Business Audit & Policy Guide to get you started.

Mistake 3: Undercharging Because You’re “New”

Being new doesn’t mean you should work for free.

Yes, you’ll start with models. Yes, you’ll grow over time.

But that doesn’t mean your time and products don’t have value.

Start with model prices that cover your costs and reflect your effort. Then build from there with confidence.

Mistake 4: Not Building an Online Presence Early

You don’t need to wait until you’re fully booked to start showing up online.

In fact, the sooner you do it, the faster you’ll attract dream clients who connect with you.

Even if it’s just behind-the-scenes, practice work, or your learning journey — share it.

People don’t just buy lashes. They buy trust, personality and connection.

Mistake 5: Trying to Do It All Alone

Lash training is one thing. Running a lash business is another.

So many new techs finish their course and suddenly feel overwhelmed — unsure how to get bookings, price services, manage their time, or stay consistent with content.

That’s exactly why I created Booked & Becoming — a 4-week step-by-step program to help you turn your certificate into a real business.
